Human rights activist Vidadi Iskenderli was detained by police on April 17 while expressing his protest against the fining of students who elected not to use an underground road crossing by the Technical University. On April 18, he was charged under article 310.1 (disobeying lawful demand of a police officer) of the Code of Administrative Violations, and the Yasmal District Court sentenced him to 10 days of administrative detention.
Prior to this, Isgenderli was arrested during an opposition protest on April 2, 2011 and sentenced to 15 days of Administrative Detention. When that sentence expired, a criminal case was instituted against him under Article 159.4.1 (impeding the right to vote through threats or violence) and 160.2.1 (Interference in an election commission’s work through threats or violence). Isgenderli was convicted and sentenced to three years of imprisonment by the Goychay Regional Court, but released at the end of 2012 through an pardon decree.
